This may not mean much to some of you but, this in itself was the number one reason for the change in my life at college and how i'm able to read about a book a day.
learning this formula increased my comprehesion and increased my grades... the real secret to speed reading (which i now do) is SQ3R when you know how the book is set up and go into to it with some background it's really amazing. ;)

one thing i've found that helps my comprehension immensely is making notes in the margins. Questions, re-framing of key concepts--often with a diagram, noting interesting connections with other things i'm thinking about, links/contrasts with what's already been said in the text...
when reading the book feels like a conversation, i absorb a lot more.
